What We’re Saying: Led by Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga seems to be embroiled in a fiercely-fought competition with itself to create the wackiest sneaker possible. The Triple S was just the start, as we’ve now seen two versions of the Track, a FiveFinger toe shoe, football boot-inspired shoes, and many more designs that have left us scratching our heads at the question of who actually buys these shoes.
At first glance, the Balenciaga Defender looks like yet another wild design that only the rich and famous with too much money and questionable taste would wear unironically. Upon closer inspection, however, the Defender isn’t quite as otherworldly as you think. Sure, the sole unit is massive and gives the sneaker an SUV-like lift. But the upper is relatively tame by Balenciaga standards, and the muted colorway helps.
Depending on how they look on foot, we might be tempted to grab a pair once they do drop. Take a look at the photos above for a closer look and stay tuned for release information.
