Thanks to Adele and Taylor Swift, Sad Girl Autumn is in full force.
Like the queens they are, the two crooners scheduled back-to-back album releases, meaning my November is ruined — if you need me, I’ll be sobbing in my bedroom.
On the 12th, Swifties collectively freaked over Red (Taylor’s Version), a re-recording of her epic 2012 album that Scooter Braun currently holds the rights to.
By re-releasing the album, Swift effectively reclaimed control of hits including “I Knew You Were Trouble” and “22.”

She also released a nearly 15-minute-long music video for “All Too Well,” a song that chronicles the dissolution of her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. Since dropping, the video’s content and subject matter have become a topic of heated debate, online and off (who TF has Taylor’s scarf?!).
Controversy aside, “All Too Well” is filled with the kind of nostalgia, longing, and reflection that autumn and its falling leaves can bring. It’s the perfect song to sip tea to while staring out the window, contemplating things past through misty eyes.
It’s not angry or triumphant; it’s just sad.
Adele’s album, 30, is just as melancholic. Simply put, it’s a divorce album.
The English singer stated in an interview with Vogue that her separation from Simon Konecki — as well as motherhood and the pressure of fame — served as inspiration for the project.
On “My Little Love,” Adele includes snippets of heartbreaking dialogue between her and her nine-year-old son, Angelo.
“I love your dad ’cause he gave you to me / You’re half me and you’re half daddy,” she tells him.
“Hold On” is another tear-jerker. “Sometimes loneliness is the only rest we get / And the emptiness actually lets us forget,” she delivers in the bridge.
Listening to the album, you get the sense that you’re listening in on some of Adele’s most private thoughts — yet there’s a restraint, and a trepidatious hopefulness, that makes it all the more devastating.
I wouldn’t consider myself a fan of Swift or Adele, but I have to admit — their new albums have opened the floodgates. For the foreseeable future, you’ll find me in my feelings.
