Summer Road Trip – Oregon Coast Highway

For the past two summers we’ve decided to hit the open road for an adventure in lieu of any sort of long distance journey requiring air travel for a multitude of reasons, namely the pandemic. Our Summer 2022 voyage was north via California Highway 1 to Oregon’s epically verdant Coastal Highway. Diego Rivera’s America @ SFMOMA, San Francisco

When in 1932, America’s richest family commissioned a painter to create a mural for their self-named Rockefeller Plaza, they placed their vision in the hands of Diego Rivera who believed an artist should serve in the role of craftsman who serves the community. A portrait of Lenin and an unflattering depiction of the Rockefeller’s excessive wealth appeared in the piece, so they asked the muralist to remove those offending images—but Rivera refused, deciding, “rather than mutilate the conception, I shall prefer the physical destruction of the conception in its entirety, but preserving, at least its integrity.” Art is truth, right?

“After seeing Gordon Parks’s 1943–44 series documenting the fishing industry along the Atlantic coast, I immediately wondered about who was omitted from that documentation: African American fishermen. I was inspired to investigate the history of Black Americans in the commercial fishing industry—a legacy that is obscured. Fishing has deep roots in the Black community, yet the voices of Black fishermen are vastly underrepresented and their businesses in decline.” —Nina Chanel Abney
