Sweet in more ways than one, here is a good look at the Nike Air Max 1 Wagashi custom. The premium offering of the Air Max 1 was created by Melbourne-based craftsman Chase Shiel and artist/photographer Ryustyler (they also linked up last year to create the Air Jordan 1 Retro High Matcha)
The Nike Air Max 1 Wagashi is said to be the companion pair to last year’s Air Jordn 1 as it is a sweet complement to the matcha. The duo spent months perfecting the design and choosing ultra-premium materials in a colorful palette drawn from the delicate art of wa-gashi –traditional Japanese sweets.
Although there is plenty to talk about when it comes to this custom, details that caught our attention include the buttery boar leather in five pastel hues that forms the body of the shoe. The fully-lined leather interior with leather insoles that further add to the premium aspects to the shoe. If you take a closer look you will find additional details such as the icy sole, custom-made translucent laces (yes, laces) and the leather tongue tags with Wagashi text on one pair and Chase Shiel x Ryustyler on the other. Peep the laser-engraved floral motif on the swoosh pays homage to the traditional chrysanthemum shape often seen in wagashi design. Fire, right?
Six additional sets of laces in five colorful ombre hues and classic
white are included in a wooden gift box, whimsically mimicking a box of traditional confectionery. The entire shoebox is stunningly packaged in handwoven Japanese fabric, wrapped by hand in traditional furoshiki style, a beautiful and eco-friendly way of wrapping gifts and objects. Finally,
the pack includes a lookbook, signed by the artists, and featuring exclusive photography by Ryustyler and behind-the-scenes looks at the meticulous process of creating the shoe.
