Jeff Cormack – Who Are We

Sounds like:
War on Drugs, Arcade Fire, Pheobe Bridgers

What’s so good?

Beyond all accolades and fancy press releases, Jeff Cormack’s “Who Are We” has that ‘something’ to it. As it sets off, you are gripped into a space of feeling, and if you listen close enough, you know you’re in for a moving ride. The vocals sound eager to tell vivid stories from behind the woozy vocal production that takes them just past clarity and into the realm of the abstract. The bass feels hidden in the mix, pulling me deeper into the listening experience as I place my focus there. Its heartbeat is comforting while the vocals shimmer and shine up above. The song quietens down with spotlighted percussion that seems to echo down the bridge linking us to quite an intense guitar performance that, although a little distorted and hard on my old ears, adds a nice wake-up for listeners who resonate with that sound. In all honesty, this song just makes me realize why I love what I do. It’s the artists. Special creatures that create through sound and quietly ask us to listen. And as we silently do so, we travel through their creativity and ability, and their memories and experiences, and their heartache and hurt, and their joy and love…letting it intermingle with our own.
