Cider and classic rave tracks…. Koppaberg clearly know the score. They’ve just broadcast a brand new UK TV commercial in which a Shogun Audio release perfectly soundtracks an idyllic summer’s day in the mountains with friends, kites and fruity alcoholic beverages.
The release is Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime (I Need Your Loving) which is a cover of the classic Korgis-sampling 1992 rave bomb by NRG (then later Baby D in 1995) It’s an authentic cover that changes the focus and rounds off the groove with the perfect balance of nostalgia and freshness. But we’re pretty sure we’re all on the same page here when we ask this: Who the dickens is this Abacus character. We know it’s a Shogun artist but which one? Something doesn’t add up here.
We were allowed to send the anonymous character a few questions. You can check the Koppaberg commercial right here on the Shogun page and the full track right here on UKF Drum & Bass…
We know you’re a Shogun act and that’s all we’ve been told. Will we ever find out who you really are?
Well, I suppose that narrows it down. However, I’m keeping quiet for now, but I’m sure the word will spread at some point or perhaps I’ll come out, who knows? I don’t…
Why the name Abacus? Is it because the world is counting on you?? (not sorry)
Yes, you’ve guessed it! Not (you should be sorry). Well if I’m honest I quite liked the sound of the name, I didn’t have a long time to come up with something and a very good friend of mine gave me a hand on that one!
Are you an old school raver at heart? What made you pick this particular classic to cover?
I absolutely am, I love a good ol’ nostalgic listening session to classics like these. But in this case, the brief was given to recreate this particular track for the Kopparberg advert, and ended up with a full song in addition!
When was the last time you changed your heart and looked and around you?
Probably the other day after one too many, or so I thought…
Nice to see some D&B / rave being used in this way. What other big brand/D&B connections would you like to see on TV in the future? Serum and cricket bats maybe? DJ Guv and male grooming products perhaps?
Good one! hahaha. Off the top of my head it would be really cool to see a Mefjus/car manufacturer collaboration used in a advert with detailed mechanical animation, they’re missing a trick there methinks, that guy is a wizard! Or DJ Guv + CBeebies come up with a new nursery rhyme?
Ha! Can we expect more Abacus material or this a one off moment we should all love?
Things are quite hectic at the moment (in a good way). There’s nothing set in stone but I’m definitely planning to write more under Abacus. It’s an exciting project for me and it will allow me to explore some new ideas and sounds…
